SEO Basics Every Small Business Owner Should Know
Search Engine Optimisation gets a bad reputation for being complicated, technical, and expensive. In reality, the fundamentals are straightforward — and getting them right can make a significant difference to how easily potential customers find you. You don't need to be a developer or hire a specialist to start making progress. Here's what matters most.
What SEO Actually Is
SEO is the practice of making your website easier for search engines like Google to understand, so it can show your pages to people searching for what you offer. Think of Google as a librarian trying to match a reader's question to the best book in its collection. Your job is to make sure your "book" is well-labelled, easy to read, and genuinely useful.
1. Start With the Right Keywords
Keywords are the words and phrases people type into search engines. Before you write a single page of content, spend time thinking about how your ideal customer describes their problem. Use free tools like Google Search Console or Google's autocomplete to find real search terms.
For local businesses, location-specific keywords are gold. "Graphic designer London" will attract far more relevant traffic than just "graphic designer." Long-tail phrases — three or four words that are more specific — are also easier to rank for than highly competitive single-word terms.
2. Write Helpful Content, Not Keyword-Stuffed Content
Google has become very good at identifying content that genuinely helps users versus content written purely to game the algorithm. Write naturally, answer real questions, and focus on being useful. If your page is the best answer to someone's question, Google will eventually reward it.
Each page on your site should have a clear purpose and target one primary topic. Your homepage, your services page, and your blog posts should all be about distinct things — not competing with each other for the same search terms.
3. Optimise Your Page Titles and Meta Descriptions
Every page on your site has a title tag — the text that appears in browser tabs and search results. This is one of the most important SEO signals you control. Keep titles under 60 characters, include your target keyword naturally, and make them descriptive and compelling.
Meta descriptions don't directly impact rankings, but they influence whether someone clicks your link. Write a clear, persuasive one or two sentences that tell the reader exactly what they'll get from your page. Think of it as a mini ad for each page.
4. Make Sure Google Can Crawl Your Site
If Google can't read your site, none of the above matters. Common technical issues that block crawlers include broken links, pages accidentally blocked in your robots.txt file, or content that only loads via JavaScript. A quick check with Google Search Console (free to set up) will reveal if your pages are being indexed correctly.
5. Build Local Signals if You Serve a Specific Area
For businesses that serve a local area, your Google Business Profile is as important as your website. Claim and complete it with accurate contact details, opening hours, photos, and your service area. Encourage satisfied customers to leave reviews — they're a major local ranking factor. Also make sure your name, address, and phone number are consistent across your website and any other directories you appear in.

Unlike paid advertising, SEO doesn't stop working the moment you stop paying. A well-optimised site can drive consistent, free traffic for years. The key is to start now, be patient, and focus on quality over shortcuts.
